Board Vacancies 2017

July 4, 2017 By Vicki

The MHCTas Board is advertising for new members.  Applicants need to commit to only four meetings a year, although it is hoped that members would also contribute to executive functions or participate as a member of a sub-committee.

The key attribute of a Board member is an understanding of and commitment to carers.  Carers play an important, unpaid and often unacknowledged role in supporting people with mental illness and carers are best placed to understand these challenges.  For this reason, the MHCTas Constitution provides that at least half of Board members should be carers.

Small community organisations face significant challenges because of limited budgets and few staff.  There is little financial flexibility or capacity to operate outside of the core funding purpose of the organisation.  For these reasons, the Board and CEO of MHCTas has focused on being clear about the purpose of the organisation and what it can realistically achieve. This focus and been driven by the development of a clear vision and strategic plan and on building a strong relationship with Mental Health Carers Australia as a peak national body.   The CEO has done an excellent job is developing and leading this focus.

However, governance of a small organisation is often just as complex as a large organisation and having members with good skills is important because of limited administrative resources.  For this reason, the MHCTas Board is looking for people with experience in governance or administration.   This would include experience in running meetings, taking minutes and developing strategic plans.  It might also include managing staff or understanding the needs of modern organisations.

If you believe that you can make a contribution to the MHCTas  – apply to become a board member.   Write a brief statement about why you would like to contribute and include details of your experience and interests.   We look forward to hearing from you.

Expressions of Interest close on Sunday 30th July 2017.
