TASCOSS ( Tasmanian Association on Social Services) has launched a project aimed at understanding workforce issues impacting our Community Services Sector. MHCTas attended a workshop with small, medium and large service providers from many community service areas where we discussed the challenges facing an aging workforce and a growing need for workers in the disability, ageing and mental health areas.
MHCTas highlighted the role carers and families play in supporting people living with a mental illness in an unpaid capacity. We encouraged members of the workshop to consider carers and families as part of the mental health workforce and that the mental health sector needs to acknowledge and value informal unpaid support through the provision education, training and support just as is done for paid support staff.[pdf-embedder url=”https://mentalhealthcarerstas.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Mental-Health-Carers-Are-Part-of-the-Support-Workforce.pdf” title=”Mental Health Carers Are Part of the Support Workforce”]
